A bat in the hands of a youngster who’s ready to knock it out of the park with an over-long delivery to get him off to a fast start on the ball. There’s no time to waste! The bowlers are all on their toes now, waiting for that one moment when the batsman will be down and out, and hopefully, by then there’ll be only three or four overs left. It’s the most crucial period of play as they try to pick up those last few wickets for their team and hopefully keep them alive. This is what happens in cricket; at some stage, one side gets into the game and the other side then tries to save themselves by bowling first.
It’s never easy to see a side get over for good and lose the rest of the session, especially because you can’t say you can see them coming back from losing a toss and getting bowled out before thirty-five minutes are up. Both sides have got plenty to think about before any decision is made though. If you look across the field the best thing to happen is the batting team comes back and drives to 90-plus as if they’re still trying to finish things off by using the powerplay. What’s worse, they don’t know what they’ve just given away. When that team gets home with 30 balls still going and the captain has run out with 10 wickets still remaining he then has to decide whether to give the next two overs to his vice-captain the final chance to finish a match. There’s absolutely no need to sit back and think your team can hold their nerve and win when they haven’t even batted a single centimeter yet.
The second thing is the bowlers take control after the opening innings are done and go on a rampage through the middle order, both batters and bowlers are tired so the quick decisions, field placings, and length changes make sense to put pressure on them to deliver on the back end. Even though their bowlers are throwing everything they have at the last three deliveries, the batting team just doesn’t need to panic in an instant and stay positive even though the rest of us should know where we’re at. Then the bowlers return in the fourth over and they’re still hoping to finish them off in the last five overs with the spinners not letting them down at every opportunity. They just needed to figure out how to keep the batsman out to turn the momentum up for themselves so fast that when they did finish it off it was over. As soon as the series came to a close the bowlers tried to follow it by bowling early with this new combination of pace bowlers who bowl slower balls. In this instance when the batsmen were bowling out and the bowlers had to come in it seemed like the bowlers weren’t sure what bowling to do. When they did attack they weren’t sure exactly which shots were happening in the air, so they decided to go with a barrage, it seemed like everything was swinging towards the bat and the bowlers were too much excited to think they were going to be stopped and the last shot would finish like the previous one. So it seemed odd for the bowlers to abandon their usual line and length strategy to bowl with a barrage when they knew their batsmen wouldn’t be able to see out the series, but in a sport that’s a very common thing that can happen, most of us know this is normal and should happen at least once in our lives. Especially during a T20.
The reason the bowlers couldn’t bowl like that was that the captain was doing everything he possibly could to help his bowlers break the batter down without having the bowlers bowling either from the top of the order. His plan was to go and bowl on the cheap shots, especially when the runs were slow, then when the batsmen were more attacking the bowlers would go slower and slow them down again until they were flat. That way the bowlers could focus on picking off those crucial runs to finish them off, instead of bowling big overs and having the bowlers only attack one side and seeing out the series. To complicate matters if the batsman was bowling out really well you still needed to bowl the first three overs, so a lot of hard work was involved and if they didn’t bowl their way out quickly the spinners would pile on the pressure and put more pressure on the bat and that’s what ultimately stopped the chase, that’s why no batsman is perfect. Even though the bowlers came in the fourth round they were still too caught up with the bat to do anything else. They tried to keep the batsman under pressure and get him out as quickly as possible which eventually resulted in a collapse.
The fifth round was pretty similar but this time the bowlers came in and just attacked fast and tried to take the bat and bowl them out with the new seam bowling, they just wanted to see off as many batsmen as they could. They were so desperate not to leave anything and that’s what caused an aggressive approach from the bowlers from when the innings ended. For the first three overs, the bowlers went for 20 or 25 runs before they hit, it wasn’t until the fourth over that the bowlers lost the plot. And then the first two balls of the last over are the ones that gave them just enough to score. As such the bowlers were aiming for this one batsman and then they wanted to get others out quickly so they went with that option, especially since that was the idea because that way the bowlers wouldn’t have to face such an issue and they’d know immediately that if they had to bowl a second over just to get someone out. And then finally when the match was coming to a close the bowlers went for a massive six and seven overs. These guys didn’t want to give anyone an edge in case they were going to make a sudden change of attack if anything were going on and they wanted to give every batsman a boost of confidence and at any point in the night they’d try to give them one last shot to finish them off. But here, these bowlers were throwing the final blows at short bowling attacks to get their way and take advantage of the batsmen getting frustrated especially now that there were two hundred and fifty overs remaining. By the time it was finished they gave everyone a push out and then came in to finish the innings and that’s where the action ends, one last effort for them to take the final two innings in.
So it’s a tough call when you look across the field, how can you watch this? I think the bowlers were making all sorts of calls regarding how to do the job and if there was any doubt about it even now when the bowlers were throwing these last-ditch threats at the batsmen. Sometimes the bowlers would ask questions about how the batsmen would respond to whatever they were offering in the form of speed, turn or reverse swing. They would also try to gauge the response of the captain as well, the captain always knows what he could do to help his team but sometimes he wants to let his bowlers do the talking, talk about some particular shots in the field that they’re targeting which could provide information as to whether the wicket is good or bad for them. Sometimes the captain might even tell the bowlers if something was going on in the field that they could ask questions about. You are definitely going to have to watch these games to figure out who got what and who came out on top. Of course, we are aware that it’s entirely possible that one player scored a hundred in a day but it only takes one of them to strike and they would have got a knock-off a hundred in the same amount of a day. So it’s important to note the players’ names in the series, the best batsmen tend to score 100 plus in any season in T20 cricket but if one of them scored a hundred, then no matter how many overs they bowled it’s hard to predict what they would give or what they would do in the next hour or two. However, what’s nice about modern technology is that you can find out the scores instantly through one of four different ways. The first is to use the VOD (video-overlays) or the third is the IPL (intelligent pitches). Second, people get alerts from various broadcasters by telephone which helps many people catch up on these matches in the middle of the play, however, you can watch them live just by sitting around watching the computer and then watching them again with the TV on. Because of modern technology even nowadays you can watch these matches on television because it’s a very old-school process that almost nobody used back in the days of cable TV channels. So the last solution is live streaming for the benefit of fans and viewers from anywhere in the world. Nowadays, millions of people watch these matches 24/7 which means they get updated versions of each individual match being played and can then go back and rewatch them in real-time whenever they’re not playing, so you might as well sit there and enjoy them.
